Arlington Ridge – Aurora Highlands Walkabout

Walkabouts

On June 10, Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hynes and over 80 neighborhood residents braved the over 90 degree heat for  a shortened version of the new two-loop Arlington Ridge-Aurora Highlands Walkabout, stopping at community gathering places, historic sites, scenic overlooks, world-class shopping destinations, and verdant parkland to share the stories and secrets of this vibrant, multi-faceted community. The route was developed by four longtime Arlington Ridge-Aurora Highlands residents who nominated their neighborhood during WalkArlington’s Walk Friendly Community Walkabout campaign, launched in recognition of Arlington’s 2011 designation as a Gold-Level Walk Friendly Community!

You too can take the Walkabout, with a self guided tour using the map generated by Walk Arlington. Find the memorial to Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, an early computer pioneer known as “amazing Grace” for her ground breaking achievements; the “Little Tea House” location, the site of a progressive 1920s restaurant which served the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart; the remnants of the 1861 Civil War fort named for General Winfield Scott; Hume School, built in 1891, that today houses the Arlington Historical Society and Museum; the site of Prospect Hill Mansion and Fort Albany and the road that in 1781 George Washington led his troops along on the way to Yorktown.  Download the map.
